The 2000 census data exhibited some interesting trends. The population of Santa Barbara County increased from 369,608 in 1990 to 399,347 in 2000. This represents a total growth of 8% for the County. The North County, however, increased 11.3%, while the South County increased by only 5%. North County's population is 198,345 and South County is 201,002.
The city that experienced the most growth was Santa Maria with a 26.3% increase. The city of Santa Barbara increased by 7.9%, while Guadalupe and Carpinteria grew by 3%. Lompoc's growth amounted to 9.2%. Lompoc's unincorporated area declined by 17.4% with the major loss occurring at VAFB, which went from 9,846 in 1990 to 6,151 in 2000. Vandenberg Village's population went from 5,971 to 5,802. Mission Hills however, increased by 30 people.
